Downtown Galleries offer abundance of art
By Laura Baird
When thinking of artists and their work, we may tend to think of the classics like Rembrandt, Monet, and Da Vinci; or more modern artists such as Andy Warhol, even Thomas Kinkade. And for those keeping up with the latest in home design, there’s Candice Olson and David Bromstad, (two of the many from HGTV). But what would you say if I told you there’s just as much talent here in Longview, Washington, waiting to be enjoyed and appreciated? It’s true – I’ve had the pleasure to see for myself! Longview has a host of galleries and spots to view, as well as purchase, an assortment of wonderful artistry.
Two of the galleries are The Broadway Gallery and Lord & McCord Art Works, right next to one another on Commerce Avenue, Downtown Longview. The diversity in Broadway Gallery is beautiful and immense, which includes jewelry, wood, quilting, pottery, note cards, paintings, photography and more. (I, myself, have a weakness for Vicki Brigden’s earrings!) Paintings by Marisa Mercure and Carol Boudreau grace the walls. photography by John S. Crocker (describing his work as “visual magic”), and Judy Vander Maten demands your attention with vivid subjects, ranging from those with intense color to subdued and serene. Be sure not to miss July’s featured artist, Alice Beckstrom, a Longview native, now living in Richland. Her specialties are stained glass and candle holders, called Krustallos, which “throw spectacular reflections across a darkened room.”
At Lord & McCord, the quality and layout are superb. Most striking to me were Ken Knodell’s glasswork, with rich colors and intricate designs; and Linda McCord’s detailed paintings of her mother, offering an intimate view of her life.
Many artists are members of the Gallery, as well as Columbian Artists Association, which will be sponsoring the annual Art in the Park at Lake Sacajawea August 20th. They also display their work at various places around Cowlitz County, such as Fusion Bubble Tea, Zojo Coffee, and Backstage CafĂ© in Kelso. Both galleries offer art classes, so that you too can unleash your “inner artist.”
If you’re looking to redecorate, and want a stylish and unique look, or just looking to add that right “something” to what you already have, look to Teague’s Interiors. Shirley and Wendy are there to take your worries away. Both are sweet and patient ladies, offering a relaxed atmosphere to browse samples of their elegant offerings, as well as a display of local artists’ work. Treat yourself anytime, or take advantage of a special gathering during First Thursday. Every first Thursday of each month, Teague’s, The Broadway Gallery, and Lord & McCord Art Works are open extended hours to host showings and featured artists’ receptions that you can enjoy with music and treats!
As Hedy Lamarr said, “A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts and inspires.” So add a new friend to your life!
