Ideas for holiday pizzazz
By Laura Baird
For many, the Christmas decorating has begun, possibly even is completed. You may decorate on “Black Friday” — eager to get into the Christmas spirit — or wait until Christmas Eve. You may keep it simple and whimsical, such as my summer lantern (pictured here) filled with ornaments, that sits inside the wood cubby. Or you may go all-out, Martha Stewart-style (her photo, below), in every aspect around the house. You may decorate just for yourself, or for the entire town to view. There are many inspirations to choose from, and yours just might be the spark in someone else’s season.
Driving around the community looking at Christmas lights and decorations is always a delight. Longview's Civic Center will light up this weekend after the annual parade. Pick just about any neighborhood, and you’re bound to see a variety of displays. One of the "holiday icons" of Longview is a house located on Ocean Beach Highway, just west of Parker’s Steak House. I love seeing it lit up on my way to and from work. And not just in town do they decorate; if you’re up for a country drive, you’ll see plenty as well. There is a display on Harmony Drive (west of Longview) that could supply three front yards!
I was introduced to a fun activity years ago… a round-robin of sorts. The ladies of my office would get together and visit each other’s homes. We’d view the decorations, and there would be something of each one's tradition to offer. There may be a sample of cookies, cider, or something equally delicious. Others may give a small gift or homemade craft to. It was fun to share a special part of our holiday, and see what others did for theirs.
This year, as always, find your enjoyment, and share!
