St. Rose Parish School students will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous comic opera, Pirates of Penzance Jr., after weeks of rehearsal as part of their middle school elective class. The “junior” version of the play condenses the plot and songs into an hour-long performance.
The show, directed by Adele Baker-Swift, The play features Quinn Anderson (7th grade) as the Pirate King, Kailey Beckwith (7th grade) as Mabel, and Felipe Scardino (6th grade) as Frederick, amid a cast of swashbuckling pirates, damsels in distress, and bungling policeman.
“The music and complex language present their own set of challenges,” said musical director Karla Dudley. “I am constantly talking about enunciation and projection. The play allows students to experience another time and place in history.”
