Certainly not all tattoos will be appreciated by everyone, but the next time you see one, consider the art itself, and know that there’s probably a good story to be told. . . Tattooing dates back as far as 9500 B.C., with mummies bearing marks and tattoos. They were first written about by Joseph Banks, a naturalist aboard the HMS Endeavor, in 1769, when encountering the Maori people of New Zealand. Yet there still exists a certain stigma associated with this practice, and those bearing the work of its artists. People choose to express themselves in a variety of ways: be it through clothes and hair style, which can easily be changed; or permanently with tattoos. A fitting cliché would be "don’t judge a book by its cover."

Today, at 85, Mary Lewis continues her love affair with sculpture in her studio and has been working on a soon-to-be-published book of her life’s work. She satisfies her craving for the feel of her lignum vitae (literally, “wood of life”) mallet in her hands as she follows the grain of a cherished piece of wood while chipping away. Heartfelt visions from her experiences, knowledge and originality transform those gifts of nature into fine works of art.

Lock, Stock & Barrel put out their first CD last summer. It’s filled with good, rocking country songs that make you feel like beltin’ it out along with them (“Big Red Dodge”); and songs that tug at your heartstrings and make you reflect on life (“Lovelady, TX”). They have a great variety of grit and wit and harmony, backed by terrific music.

Between Longview and Castle Rock, perched on the edge of a creek, sits The Lone Fir tavern. Built in 1924, it was a grocery store/gas station, but now it is a cozy local tavern. The parking lot, facing Pleasant Hill Road, showcases everything from Mercedes to Harleys, new and old. The crowd range is as wide as the cars in the lot. Met with big smiles and warm greetings as you enter, you’ll find it comfortable.

Above the home plate grandstand is the press box, filled with its staff of scorekeepers, scoreboard operators, radio play-by-play commentators, the sound technician and the voice of the Black Bears, Kevin Taylor.
