Gingerbread is special and life is good

Categories:  Food+Drink In Print

Thumb_gingerbread In America, gingerbread usually means two types of cookies–Middle European honey-based cookies or English molasses shortbreads. The cookies can range from thin and crisp to puffy and soft. They can be plain or elaborately shaped and decorated. Gingerbread can also be the spicy cake I loved as a child.

A Taste of Mindfulness: Savoring the season by slowing down

Categories:  Food+Drink Viewpoints In Print

Thumb_wheeldon-pic The best news is that savoring and mindfulness don’t have to be another “To Do.” We do not need to sit on a mountaintop to do this. We can practice it this season right at our dinner table, by making the simplest meal a celebration not only of the food, but of the people we love.

Northwest Gardener: Putting your garden to bed

Categories:  Home+Garden In Print

Thumb_nwg-forsythia Pacific Northwest gardeners often approach autumn gardening projects with a sense of urgency. We want to “clean up” decaying annual flowers, untidy shrubs and thickets of perennials before the cold rains of winter dampen our enthusiasm. Before you clear out everything in sight, pause long enough to identify the different types of plants. A moderate approach to projects that address particular needs will ensure a successful winter slumber.

Man in the Kitchen: Flash - A feast of fish

Categories:  Food+Drink In Print

Thumb_paulssalmon_bob101411 I enjoy fishing and catching fish, as you might have gathered. I also enjoy presenting them at home or to a host for a special, shared dinner. We didn’t just buy this fish at Safeway. I caught it. Like hunting,I think that fishing fulfills a basic male instinct to go out and hunt, bringing home the bounty to share with the rest of the tribe.

Roll Out The Barrel: Rodeo Queen finds promising racing partner

Categories:  Out+About Arts+Entertainment In Print

Thumb_sparky_1 From an early age, Nichole settled fully into the horse scene going through show performance and dressage. “But I always wanted something more,” she said. Eventually, that path led her to her first love: barrel racing, training and competing. Now she has Sparky, who seems to have endless possibilities for superior performance. Nichole is ready to add the final piece in his training — speed. This requires a new level of commitment, she said. “You have to get into his mind more deeply to add speed.”

CRR Announces 4th Haiku Contest

Categories:  Arts+Entertainment In Print

Thumb_haiku_art Columbia River Reader announces its fourth annual Haiku Contest. . . For those unfamiliar with the genre, haiku is a poetry form which originated in Japan and became famous during the Edo era (1603-1868). . . Traditional haiku is intended to represent a single moment or event that the poet observes, connected with nature and frequently a season. The pop version is about anything the poet wants to make it.

Tom Myklebust on Sports: How to cope during indefinite delay of the NBA??!

Thumb_tbbrandonroy2010 The dispute is mostly over money and contracts, like most labor disputes. The ones who will lose the most are the fans, the support staff, and surrounding service industries. . .

Everyday Ethics: Candy Equality, Social Regrets, Shared Use of Public Campgrounds

Categories:  Viewpoints In Print

Thumb_pope_rick_mug_cmyk For better and worse, we also live in a crowded modern age. Unless we are hermits in the forest full time, we need to think of the impact our actions have on the people surrounding us . . . That is the essence of ethics.

The Lower Columbia Informer: . . . for the times, they are a-changin’

Categories:  Viewpoints In Print

Thumb_perry_piper_crr_0911 Longstanding college professors probably see value in the traditional term papers and testing proceedures, but I look forward to the day when all classes will use computer software and less structured methods of helping us learn. This quarter at LCC I am taking astronomy and political science . . . (which) has excluded any traditional formal papers to write or tests to take in class. Instead, our instructor emphasizes the course text and has us keep a journal of notes, definitions to new words and contextual questions for class discussions.

Dynamic Exposure: Perceptions, understanding of movies can evolve over time

Categories:  Arts+Entertainment Viewpoints In Print

Thumb_perry_piper_crr_0911 Our perceptions in life advance and diversify over time as we learn through new experiences and gain knowledge. Until we become adults, we might not be able to comprehend the depth of meaning after an initial exposure to something. No matter what fraction of the whole picture we have, we can expand on our thinking through discussion with others. After multiple encounters, we may have revelations on the subject matter. I recently reflected upon some of the movies that really stuck in my mind as examples of this “dynamic exposure” idea.
