Between Longview and Castle Rock, perched on the edge of a creek, sits The Lone Fir tavern. Built in 1924, it was a grocery store/gas station, but now it is a cozy local tavern. The parking lot, facing Pleasant Hill Road, showcases everything from Mercedes to Harleys, new and old. The crowd range is as wide as the cars in the lot. Met with big smiles and warm greetings as you enter, you’ll find it comfortable.

The Mt. St. Helens Hiking Club is about hiking, that’s for sure, but the social aspect of the club is something that you might not “get” with just a cursory scan of its website. Members not only get together to hike their way through the beautiful scenery of the Pacific Northwest, but also to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with sharing the challenge of those hikes.

Adrenaline rises for Cowlitz Black Bear fans as they approach David Story Field on the Lower Columbia College campus in Longview, Washington. The music is loud and clear, the snap of leather from hard-thrown baseballs, the buzz of friends chatting. The concession stand is sizzling and soon Corby the Bear will be entering the well-groomed field. But way before fans show up, an entire crew has been busy. Above the home plate grandstand is the press box, filled with its staff of scorekeepers, scoreboard operators, radio play-by-play commentators, the sound technician and the voice of the Black Bears, Kevin Taylor.

When I see a map of Washington and notice the William O. Douglas Wilderness Area — a 264 square-mile expanse of roadless national forest named in 1984 to honor the longest-serving U.S. Supreme Court Justice — it reminds me of the man himself and of my encounter with him years ago. . . In the summer of 1964 I saw a newspaper item about Douglas’ upcoming hike along a section of ocean coastline in Olympic National Park. With his encouragement, I borrowed my dad’s car and, along with two friends, drove up Highway 101 to the Hoh River then down the north bank road to its end a mile from the ocean, arriving after dark, uninvited, and crashed the party.

You can visit the farmer’s market, join a CSA (community-supported agriculture, with consumers “subscribing” in advance for produce), shop at a roadside stand or go directly to the farm to buy your food. Buying local food supports your community and using local food encourages healthy eating.
