Squirrelfest was the brainchild of Pat Sari, one of the owners of Columbia Ford. Pat is a member of a nutty group of pranksters called The Sandbaggers. They caught fire with the idea and promoted it into a very successful event. An event that merged with the Longview Bicycle Criterium, an exciting series of bicycle races through the streets of Longview, this year near the Longview City Library.

Story and Photos by Alan Rose • Almost as important as the food is the ambience. Grounds for Opporunity's warm colors, the herb boxes in the large windows that afford ample light, and the use of native woods all were designed to create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. “Instead of ‘turning tables’ (getting people in and out as quickly as possible),” Keven said, “our goal is to create a welcoming environment that people will savor as much as the food.”

By Susan P. Piper • So please help us narrow the field. Let us know which eatery in the Columbia River region YOU think serves a great burger. Dr. Munchie will select candidates, go on a hamburger eating binge, and announce his 2012 Best Burgeroster later this fall. Someone else will probably have to write up the actual paperwork, but you can be sure Dr. Munchie will mastermind the Hunt and dictate the story.

Story & Photos by Melanee Evans • Few activities invoke summer charm like an old-fashioned picnic in the park, and children in particular delight in the simple festivity. When I mentioned the idea of a gourmet picnic at Bradley State Scenic Park in Clatskanie to my husband and three girls, they cheered with glee and the little ones ran to pack.

Story by Karla C. Dudley • Photos by David Bell • I love picnics. To my mind, a tasty meal packed in a basket and eaten outside in a beautiful place is always preferable to sitting in a restaurant. So when Sue asked me to be one of the “Man in the Kitchen picnic testers,” I jumped at the chance. It’s even better to eat gourmet food outside when someone else has prepared it!

Story and Photo by Michael O. Perry • It is so quiet at Prescott Beach. And, every so often you get to see a big ocean-going ship heading up or down river, or maybe a set of barges being pushed by a tugboat. If the wind is right, you might even see windsurfers. The river is a busy place, and sitting there watching the world go by is a great way to spend a hot afternoon.

Story by Paul Thompson • One warm day recently, The Reader sent three writers and their families on “catered” picnics, prepared by CRR publisher/editor Sue Piper and me. We picked special riverside places for the picnics but whatever the location and no matter how you pack it, a picnic is a great diversion from everyday activities and, in fact, can become a special event in itself.

By Greg Smith • Late July and early August are the time for "shooting stars," which are actually not stars, but meteors. The most famous meteor shower is the Perseids. It is called the Perseids because the meteors stream into the Earth from the direction of the constellation Perseus. . . There is a lot to see on a clear night in the summer, and this is the best time of year for us to see what’s out there. So as you relax and look for meteors, just look around, pan the binoculars across the sky, and see the grandeur of the star clouds of the Milky Way. See what you can discover. Maybe you’ll see wonders you’ve never seen before and be thrilled like the astronomers of old.
