Have you heard people say Longview is no fun? They say they want to go to Portland, otherwise they will just lie in bed all day. I was out on the town the other night and thought about all the fun things we have in the area.

When first walking into the Cowlitz County Museum, you’re greeted by a large 1929 Ford truck and a Hamilton Mfg. Co. printing press. Panoramic photos fill many walls. There are several display areas with models, photos, information plaques, life-size replicas, and more. There is no wasted space; but the layouts allow for terrific viewing. You see the store front of a mercantile, the depot of a train stop, and you’re able to peek into an original log cabin that was built near the Toutle River. It became the property of Weyerhaeuser, which was later donated to, reassembled and refurbished by the Museum.

The Bruners own Lone Tree Alpaca Farm, in Toledo, Washington. When I visited with them, I had the pleasure of seeing a two-day young male, named Pedro. His mother and several "aunts" were busy tending to him, while many others looked on. Less than a week later, another little one, named Poncho, made his arrival. Jack is recently retired from Boeing, and he and his wife, Jacki, have been raising alpacas for over four years. They enjoy these mostly sedate animals, but can tell you that alpacas, like any human or other creature, develop their own personalities.

Scottish author Robert Lewis Stevenson famously referred to wine as “bottled poetry.” In our local area there are a number of winemakers who toil long hours to bring out all the delicate elegance that wine grapes have to offer…to use their knowledge, skill, hard work and resources to bring their own personalized “poetry” in bottled form to our region.

They don’t act or sound much like tortured artists. These women are laughing and joking, apparently having a great time. Every week they gather to unleash their “inner artists,” with instruction, feedback and encouragement from local artist George Broderick.

Today, at 85, Mary Lewis continues her love affair with sculpture in her studio and has been working on a soon-to-be-published book of her life’s work. She satisfies her craving for the feel of her lignum vitae (literally, “wood of life”) mallet in her hands as she follows the grain of a cherished piece of wood while chipping away. Heartfelt visions from her experiences, knowledge and originality transform those gifts of nature into fine works of art.
