Enjoying the Good Life

The original Columbia River Reader was launched in 2000 by Randy Sanders. Based in St. Helens, Oregon, Sanders created a popular monthly "alternative" publication with a reputation for pushing certain envelopes and for boldly getting at the "behind-the-scenes" truth. In early 2004, he sold Columbia River Reader to Longview, Washington resident Susan Piper who, after several years as a correspondent for The Daily News — writing its business column and regular real estate and feature stories —  had developed the dream and desire for a publication of her own.

Piper expanded and re-energized Columbia River Reader, building a community of writers and contributors with a mission of "helping readers discover and enjoy the good life in the Columbia River region, at home and on the road." The publication focuses on recreation, outings, arts and entertainment, Northwest food and wine, local history and opportunities for fun

The publication's 13,500-copy distribution encompasses a 30-mile radius of Longview on both sides of the River, from Clatskanie to Scappoose, Oregon, and Cathlamet to Woodland, Washington.

An optimistic, playful and lively publication, Columbia River Reader reflects an appreciation for the natural beauty, unique character and history of the Pacific Northwest and is built upon friendship and famiy ties. The Publisher/Editor's husband, son and two brothers and many longtime friends all write and help with production, promotion and distribution. Writers and contributors gather for a Post-Publication Party (called "The PPP") shortly following each new issue's completion.

"Every month is a marathon," said Piper, celebrating the "new" CRR's 84th issue recently. "Every month is a miracle."
